The Total amount expended in buildings in this colony up to the present time is, in round numbers, (exclusive of that laid out by the Chinese) Seven hundred thousand Dollars ($700,000).
The Notification announcing the intention of Her Majesty's Government not to recognize any grants or sales made previous to the exchange of the Ratification of the Treaty was published on the 24th August last, and since that period no new buildings have been commenced, but all which were then in progress were continued without interruption.
Since the Notification under date 10th April 1843, and published on the 14th month, calling upon all holders of land to send in proofs of their claims to it, and announcing (what had before been repeatedly declared) that the terms and tenure were to depend solely on the Majesty's Government, and that those terms and tenure could not be made known until the information called for by that Notification was furnished, I estimate that Two hundred and fifty thousand Dollars ($250,000) have been expended, and that about Three hundred and fifty thousand Dollars ($350,000) or one half of the whole sum laid out on buildings on the Island have been expended since the 14th January, 1843 prior...
